Teeth whitening is the safest and most conservative method of smile improvement. There are two basic types of whitening:
Internal whitening is a method used to whiten teeth with discoloration caused either by trauma (black tooth) or by materials used during endodontic treatment (root canal). The whitening material is placed inside the tooth and reapplied until the tooth has the desired colour.
There are two methods of external whitening:
a) Home Whitening (night & day)
Teeth whitening is done with transparent splints, which are made after taking impressions of the patient’s teeth. The whitening material (gel) is placed on the splints and then placed in the mouth so that the whitening gel comes in contact with the teeth. The splints are left in the mouth for 2-8 hours each day depending on the concentration of the gel. The treatment is completed in 2 weeks on average.
b) Whitening in the clinic
In-office whitening is performed by the dentist with or without the use of a special light source. The procedure lasts 1-1.5 hours.
In-clinic bleaching is followed by at-home bleaching with splints for 5-7 days. This is done to stabilize the white color of the teeth. While the whitening process is ongoing, smoking and consumption of coffee, red wine, cola, etc. is prohibited.
