Whitening

Bleaching is the most conservative method of cosmetic dentistry. Many clinical and laboratory studies have been conducted on both the efficacy and safety of the method. It is now fully documented that whitening is a safe procedure that does not destroy tooth enamel, does not cause stomach problems, and does not cause oral cancer. The only side effect that can be observed is tooth sensitivity, which disappears at the end of the treatment. Modern formulations contain desensitizing agents (potassium nitrate), reducing this side effect to a minimum.

During whitening, smoking and consumption of foods and drinks that can cause tooth discoloration (coffee, tea, red wine, Coca Cola, cherries, etc.) should be avoided.

Large white fillings, sockets or veneers on the front teeth may be a contraindication because the bleaching process only whitens the natural teeth and not the restorative materials (resins, porcelain).

Therefore, upon completion of the whitening process, these restorations must be changed to match the colour of the natural teeth.

Finally, we avoid whitening teeth during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Hydrogen peroxide is the substance that whitens teeth. Depending on the method, it is used in different forms and different concentrations.

Home        10%, 15%, 20%, 35% Carbamide peroxide
Clinic    35-40% Hydrogen peroxide

The bleaching gels (carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide) penetrate the outer surface of the tooth, penetrate into the tooth, where they break down the pigments in the process of oxidation and change the actual colour of the tooth. Whitening not only removes the external pigments that teeth may have, but also changes the actual color of the tooth, without affecting the structure and hardness of the enamel.

Clinical research has shown that the effect of whitening can last for several years. However, it is recommended for color maintenance that once a year home whitening with a custom made splint for 2-4 days is recommended. This way we ensure a bright smile.

Porcelain veneers

They are thin ceramic coatings that are bonded only to the front surface of the teeth as opposed to crowns that surround and cover the entire tooth.
In those cases where we wish to improve the shape, size, position or colour of the teeth. Worn, yellow or broken teeth, spaces (gaps) between teeth, teeth with slight bends or mild crowding can be aesthetically restored by using porcelain veneers.
In addition to the initial visit in which a smile analysis and treatment plan is performed, two more visits will be needed. In the first one, the teeth are prepared, impressions are taken and temporary ones are made, while in the second one, the ceramic veneers made in the dental laboratory are bonded to the teeth.
One of the advantages of porcelain veneers is that they are welded very firmly to the enamel of the teeth and this ensures a long service life. Another advantage is their colour stability because porcelain does not adsorb pigments (coffee, cigarettes, red wine, etc.). With proper oral hygiene and visiting the dentist twice a year, your veneers will remain aesthetically and functionally flawless for many years (10-20 years).
If only the upper teeth need porcelain veneers but at the same time you want the color of your teeth to be whiter, then we whiten the lower teeth so that there is no color difference with your veneers.
Your porcelain veneers need proper oral hygiene just like your natural teeth. With daily brushing and interdental cleaning (dental floss) as well as regular visits to the dentist (every six months) they will be kept in perfect condition for many years.
